Rooted in the process of cartooning, I approach my studies as character and scene development. Using graphite (and occasionally color pencil) on newsprint or found book pages, my studies act as both preliminary sketches and design blueprints. The studies are an integral part of my process in order to plan the engineering of the ceramic form and supporting base combinations in my sculpture, alongside manually distilling source material into flat, organic shapes. In a diaristic way, my studies record recurring themes and formal gestures from piece to piece. Moods and attitudes resurface, allowing for a generative sense of openness to seep into the conceptualization of my work.
