Rooted in the process of cartooning, I approach my studies as character and scene development. Using graphite (and occasionally color pencil) on newsprint, grid paper, or found book pages, my studies act as both preliminary sketches and design blueprints. The studies are an integral part of my process in order to plan the engineering of the ceramic form and supporting base combinations in my sculpture. In a diaristic way, my studies record recurring themes, shapes, and formal gestures over time. Moods and attitudes resurface, allowing for a generative sense of openness to seep into the ideation phase of my work.
