WORKS ON PAPER

Much like his sculptures, Ziemann’s works on paper combine disparate found and handmade components. He treats the collage process as a formal exercise—one that uses color, pattern, texture, gesture, and form as a way of compounding the imaginary with the seemingly banal. Ziemann’s collages act as emblematic utterances. Coded in the language of formal abstraction, they are laden with metaphorical and personal reference. Often created alongside his sculptures and titled using parsed words, Ziemann’s collages act as visual clues to the way he fuses formal and conceptual thought processes, providing a key to the ever-evolving lexicon of motifs and symbolic references embedded within his work.
