WORKS ON PAPER
Much like his sculptures, Ziemann’s works on paper combine disparate found and handmade components. He treats the collage process as a formal exercise—one that uses color, pattern, texture, gesture, and shape as a way of blending the imaginary with the seemingly banal. Ziemann’s collages act as emblematic utterances, coded in the language of formal abstraction yet laden with metaphorical personal reference. Often created alongside his sculptures and titled using parsed words or phrases, Ziemann’s collages act as visual clues to the way he fuses formal and conceptual thought processes, providing a key to the motifs and symbolic references embedded within his work.
